With the recent increase in native .pdf support in Vault, it can be a useful enhancement to generate thumbnail images of .pdf files to make them easier and faster to browse. This is a server side setting change so you may need to consult your IT department or supplier.
1. Download and install the free Foxit reader and perform a standard installation on the Vault server machine. Be aware, at time of writing the Foxit reader installer will install several other application or “bloatware” if options to do so are not deselected. We are installing Foxit reader to get access to the iFilter component, this allows Windows to create thumbnails when it indexes the.pdf files for searching, if you wish to use a different iFilter then this should work also.
2. Enable Windows search indexing. If not already enabled, first install the windows search feature by going to Server manager > Add feature wizard. Then make sure that the search service is running and set to start automatically.
3. Set .pdf search indexing to include contents. Go to Indexing options > Advanced > File Types Tab and find pdf in the list, tick the box to enable the newly installed iFilter to access more data when it indexes.
4. Rebuild Indexes. While still in Indexing options > Advanced hit the rebuild button, then also open the Vault ADMS console and right click on your Vault and select “Re-Index File Properties”.
When the indexing has completed, open up a fresh Vault client and browse to some .pdf files while the view is set to show thumbnail tiles.
